The South Bank has transformed. A decade ago, staying near Waterloo meant a functional hotel near a train station. Now it means the Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe, Borough Market, the National Theatre, and the London Eye all within walking distance. The river walk from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge is one of the best urban walks in Europe — and you can start it from your hotel. For visitors who want a cultural London base without being in the tourist scrum of the West End, the South Bank is a strong alternative.

The South Bank walk — why this location works
The riverside path from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge is 3.5km and takes about 50 minutes at a gentle pace. Along the way: the London Eye and County Hall, Southbank Centre and the Royal Festival Hall, the National Theatre, Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge, Shakespeare's Globe, the Clink Prison Museum, Borough Market, and Southwark Cathedral. If you stay near the South Bank, this walk is essentially your front garden. Do it in both directions at different times of day — the city looks different in morning light and at sunset.
Staying near Waterloo & the South Bank: FAQ
Yes — the South Bank is one of London's most improved areas. Tate Modern, the National Theatre, Southbank Centre, Borough Market, Shakespeare's Globe, and the London Eye are all within walking distance. Waterloo station gives you fast Elizabeth line access and the Eurostar (via St Pancras, 20 min). The main tradeoff: it can feel quiet and residential once you leave the cultural strip, and river-view rooms carry a price premium.
The South Bank cultural quarter: Tate Modern (10 min walk), National Theatre (5 min), BFI IMAX (3 min), London Eye (5 min), the Southbank Centre and Royal Festival Hall (5 min). Borough Market is 15 minutes east across the river via Blackfriars or London Bridge. Westminster and the Houses of Parliament are directly across the river via Westminster Bridge — 10-minute walk.
50–55 minutes by Tube (Jubilee to Canary Wharf, then Elizabeth line to Heathrow — or Waterloo to Green Park, then Piccadilly to Heathrow). There's no single direct line. For Gatwick: direct Thameslink from Waterloo East (50 min). For City Airport: Jubilee to Canary Wharf, DLR to City Airport (25 min total). Waterloo is better placed for Gatwick and City Airport than Heathrow.
Skylon (Royal Festival Hall) for a London view with reliable cooking. Bao for queues that prove it's worth it. Padella on Borough Market side for pasta. Flat Iron at the South Bank for reliable steak. Anchor & Hope (The Cut, 10 min from Waterloo) is a proper gastropub — arrive at noon when it opens or expect a wait. For budget options: Borough Market at lunchtime has excellent street food at reasonable prices.
