London is the most Harry Potter city in the world — not just because the films are set here, but because many of them were actually filmed here. From the real train station with a real Platform 9¾ to the set where Dumbledore's office was built, the experiences range from free (King's Cross, Leadenhall Market) to unmissable-but-pricey (the Studio Tour). Here's how to make the most of it.

The verdict

The Studio Tour is the undisputed centrepiece — real sets, real props, real costumes. It's expensive and requires advance planning, but for any level of fan it's genuinely outstanding. Combine it with a central London walking tour of filming locations for a complete Harry Potter day in the city.

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour

The main attraction is at Leavesden Studios northwest of London, where all eight films were shot. You'll walk through the actual Great Hall, visit Dumbledore's office and the Gryffindor common room, see the full-size Hogwarts Express, and browse the Forbidden Forest and the Backlot (where you can also drink Butterbeer). The scale of the props and costume departments is genuinely staggering even if you're only a casual fan.

Don't underestimate the journey: add at least 45 minutes each way from central London. Build a full day around it — don't try to squeeze it in alongside other major attractions.

A guided walking tour of the filming locations adds context you won't get wandering alone — guides know which exact spot each scene was filmed, and some buildings look dramatically different without the CGI additions. Tours run about 2 hours and cover 8–12 locations in central London.

Yes — several. King's Cross Station has a permanent Platform 9¾ installation (free, in the main station). Leadenhall Market in the City was used as Diagon Alley. The café near Borough Market (The Leaky Cauldron exterior). Australia House on the Strand served as Gringotts. Walking tours visit all of these.

It's a sweet, cream-soda-flavoured non-alcoholic drink with a frothy head. Served in a souvenir cup. Almost everyone buys one and most people enjoy it. Available in cold, hot, and ice cream versions in the outdoor Backlot area.

Most visitors spend 3–4 hours. There's no time limit once inside, so keen fans sometimes stay 5–6 hours. The mandatory timed entry only applies to when you enter — you can stay as long as you like after that.
