Three landmark views. Three very different experiences. The London Eye is the most famous, The Shard is the highest, and Sky Garden is free — but none is clearly "the best" without knowing what you're after. Here's an honest comparison.

The verdict

For first-time visitors: The London Eye. It's the most iconic, the most photographed, and the most Londoner-approved experience. The rotating capsule gives you 30 minutes of views without needing to navigate floors or crowds.

For the best photography: The Shard. The altitude gives you a perspective you can't get from the Eye — you can see the Eye from above, the City spread out beneath you, and on clear days, far beyond the M25. The champagne upgrade is worth it for a special occasion.

For the best free experience: Sky Garden — but only if you can book 3 weeks ahead. The views from the 35th floor of 20 Fenchurch Street (the "Walkie-Talkie" building) are genuinely impressive and include a planted garden with a bar. Booking opens online for free slots every Monday morning.

Sky Garden: how to get free tickets

Free Sky Garden slots are released on the official website (skygarden.london) approximately 3 weeks in advance. They go within minutes on Monday mornings. You can also walk in without a booking but must queue — this only works on quiet weekday mornings.

Observation Decks: Frequently Asked Questions

The Shard wins on height and photography — at 244 metres it gives a true bird's eye view of the whole city including the Eye itself. The London Eye offers a more panoramic 360° experience at a lower altitude and is more of an event (30 minutes rotating in a capsule). For the best photos of London, The Shard. For the best experience, the Eye.

Sky Garden is excellent and free — but capacity is strictly limited and it books up 3 weeks in advance. The views from 35 floors are good but not as dramatic as The Shard (72 floors). If you can get a Sky Garden slot, it's a fantastic free alternative. If not, it's not worth trying to last-minute queue.

Standard entry starts from £33 per adult. Prices vary by time slot — morning and weekday slots are cheapest; weekend evenings are the most expensive. Booking online in advance is always cheaper than buying on the day.

Standard adult tickets start from £32 online; fast track from £38. Booking online saves roughly 10–15% versus buying on the day. The Eye does not have a fixed time slot system — you board during your allocated 30-minute window.

On a rare perfectly clear day, The Shard is better — the altitude means you can see Windsor Castle (22 miles) and, on exceptional days, the North Downs. The London Eye offers equally good views in most conditions but at lower altitude. Neither is worth visiting in heavy fog or rain.
